Construction Progress

April 6, 2012

It is week 37 in the construction of the new PeaceHealth Peace Island Medical Center. The busy work site is showing great progress both inside and outside. Most of the windows have now been installed, and bright orange weather barrier sheathing is being completed. Siding will begin the second week in April.

Interior framing now defines the rooms and corridors, and drywall installation will begin in a few weeks. One of the building features is a staircase and gallery connecting the clinic with the imaging and diagnostic area and the inpatient rooms. Along one gallery wall will be a mural by Annie Adams depicting the history of medical services on San Juan Island and contributions of PeaceHealth to island and regional healthcare. Across from the mural will be a wall of windows looking out on the natural scene.

Construction continues to be on time and on budget, and the various crews, which at times include as many as 50 workers on site, are coordinating activities effectively while maintaining a clean and safe worksite. Nick Cusanelli, Senior Superintendent on the project for the construction company, Howard S. Wright, noted in a recent weekly update report that for him a highlight of the job is “coming to work each day and working with the team and the crews in the field,” many of which are island construction personnel. He offers, “kudos to all of our subcontractors and their crew for their housekeeping efforts... It really shows the pride that the workers take in their workplace."
Great progress is also being made on the EMS building which shares the site and will be close to the medical center emergency department. Wood exterior framing has been finished, and roof sheathing will be completed shortly. This part of the project, too, is on time and on budget.
